Tis wearing o' the green!
Happy St. Patrick' s Day!

ERIN GO BRAGH!
(Translation: Ireland Forever!)

Hey to all my Irish peeps and everyone who knows an Irish lad or Colleen!
I thought I would learn you some tidbits about certain rites, rituals, customs etc in regards to St. Patrick's Day. You may have read a previous blog of mine(I hope that you did) where I twigged everyone on about St. Patrick and how March 17 was associated to him. Today, let's talk about why does EVERYONE and their uncle wear green on St. Paddy's. For starters, back in the day, in Ireland, there were two major religious groups. The Protestants and the Catholics. At one time, it was against the law in Ireland to be a member of the Protestant church! The Catholics rounded up all the men, women and children who were members of the said church and drove them into the woods to starve and perish as punishment! Tables were turned and the Protestants enacted a law that made wearing green illegal! Any Catholic found in green was arrested and imprisoned! Many songs were written about that law! Such as :" Wearing Of The Green"! It starts out: "oh, Paddy, dear and did you hear the news that's going round. The shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground! St. Patrick's Day no more we'll keep. His colours can't be seen! For there's a cruel law agin the wearing of the green." The Protestants
, themselves, are known as The Orange Men. On March 17, a large contingency of The Orange Men dress up in orange and parade in the streets banging large bass drums. The purpose of this, I'll be honest, I haven't a clue. I was raised as an Irish Catholic and have done some studying on Celtic studies. In modern times, on St Patrick's Day besides signifying your Irish heritage, the wearing of green, is to protect one from being pinched. If you're not wearing green anywhere on St. Patrick's Day, more than likely, you'll be pinched! Again, I haven't a clue in regards to this custom. Lol! Never have been pinched for not wearing green! FYI: these are customs that are prevalent in America. Thank my lucky stars for that! So, another custom is the meal of corned beef and cabbage. That's actually, American fare for St. Paddy's! If you were lucky enough to be in Ireland on March 17, the meal would sometimes, consist of a casserole type dish called Dublin Coddle. The ingredients usually are potatoes, cabbage, sausage, onions, ham or bacon. Yummy! There really isn't a typical meal for St. Pat's on Ireland. It is, whatever, the mammy(pronounced mommy) has prepared traditionally for her family.

Why the drinking of green beer? Ok, let me say and clarify this...YUCKY!! Seriously, green beer has green food colouring added to it and if you've ever had it before, you'll never have it AGAIN! Have some + Bailey's Irish Cream Liqueur, or a wee dram of some Jameson's Irish whiskey instead! If those alcoholic bevvies, aren't your cup of tea, hoist a pint of + Guinness. Side note: Sir Alec Guinness, Obie Wan Kenobi, is from THAT family!
Mind you, I'm not condoning any partaking in the imbibing of aforementioned alcoholic drinks, I'm just saying green beer is beyond NASTY and if you decide to toast Ireland's patron saint on his day, have a true Irish beverage! PSA: have a designated driver and know when to say when! Don't want to have a hellish Monday because you're hungover from Sunday! That's adding insult to injury! Lol!

.

Soz, I'm off and I'll leave you with how cheers is said in Ireland: Slainte!
This means health.
We, Irish, wish you health!

May the Force be with us all!
May God hold you in the
hollow of His hand.
If you're lucky enough to be
Irish,
You're lucky enough!
This is my personal favourite,
May your pocket hold a coin or two
May there be enough work for you to do.
May the rains fall soft upon your fields
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine brightly upon your door
Until we meet again...
Slan Lat!
(Translation: good bye)

P.S.If you're in the mood for some traditional Irish music to listen and yearn for the auld sod, I recommend The Cheiftains, Clannad, Enya. For some of us that want to raise a rump ruckus and have a good craic then, it's +The Tossers, +The Dubliners.+ Flogging Molly! I like +Dropkick Murphys( who doesn't) , +U2, +The Pogues
